Browns 21, Panthers 18: Five Calls Backed Carolina. One Got It Right — and Nailed the Score

Cleveland beat Carolina 21-18 in Week 3, and the six graded predictions we tracked on this game leaned hard the wrong way. Five of six picked the Panthers. Only one pundit had Cleveland winning — and he also called the final margin exactly.

The verdict: a lopsided field, a lopsided miss

Of the six calls this game settled, five picked Carolina and one picked Cleveland. The Browns won by three. That's not a split field that got unlucky — it's a field that bet against the home team and lost.

Three of those five Carolina picks came with exact scores, and all three had the final margin right (three points) while getting the winner wrong — a quirk of how these calls get scored: naming a close game correctly still earns partial credit even when you have the wrong team crossing the goal line first. That's why the ledger shows three "close" grades sitting next to two outright misses, rather than five uniform zeros.

The call worth naming

Pete Prisco was the only pundit tracked on this game who took Cleveland, and he didn't hedge: "The Browns take it in an upset. Pick: Browns 23, Panthers 20." The final was 21-18 — same three-point margin, right team. That's as clean a score call as this matchup produced, and it graded as a hit (100 accuracy, +11.39 skill).

Worth being straight about what that skill number does and doesn't say, though: Cleveland was the site's naive, home-field default in this game. Prisco's call matched the boring baseline pick, which is why the reward is modest rather than a windfall — the real skill test this week was picking the Panthers to spring the upset, and nobody who tried that beat the field.

The misses, by name

Three pundits called the same three-point margin as Prisco but had Carolina winning it instead of losing it:

• Tyler Sullivan: "Panthers at Browns Projected score: Panthers 24, Browns 21" — graded 50 accuracy, -83.11 skill.
• John Breech: "Panthers 20-17 over Browns" — also 50 accuracy, -83.11 skill.
• Richard Sherman split the difference between two scores — "I got the Carolina Panthers winning this game 24-28, or 28-24" — a four-point margin instead of three, and the wrong winner. That graded 47.62 accuracy, -87.61 skill, the softest of the three "close" misses.

Two calls missed outright. Colin Cowherd's show gave a bare winner pick with no hedge — "We shall see. I like the Panthers as well" — which graded 0 accuracy and -189 skill. A caller on The Rich Eisen Show, going through Carolina's full schedule back in late August, predicted a road win in Cleveland ("Man, we're just better than them"); that one graded 0 and -200, the harshest mark on the board, in line with a call made three-plus weeks out.

What this does to their records

Prisco's hit lands inside a decent body of work on score calls: 62% accuracy across 55 graded score predictions this season, with an overall missed-takes score of 10.82. One more correct margin call doesn't remake his profile, but it's consistent with it.

Sherman's miss is a mild step down from his own standard — he's at 68.99% accuracy on score predictions across 23 graded calls, well above the 47.62 he got here, so this one sits below his typical floor rather than at it.

Cowherd's miss is the more interesting interruption. He's built a real record calling game outcomes — 70.51% accuracy across 87 graded picks, enough volume to call it an established sample — and this is a clean zero sitting in the middle of that otherwise solid stretch, not a continuation of a pattern.

Beyond this game

Season-long, our tracking shows a similar shape for these two teams: Cleveland's win-total calls are hitting at 90% accuracy through four graded calls, while Carolina's have split closer to a coin flip at 64% across seven.
