The San Francisco 49ers, commonly called the Niners, were founded in 1944 in San Francisco, California. The franchise now plays its home games at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, where the club is also headquartered. Owner Jed York presides over an organization led by general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. The team's recent history charts a striking arc. After bottoming out at 2–14 in 2016, the Niners rebuilt steadily, reaching the Super Bowl in 2019 with a 13–3 record. A 6–10 pandemic season followed, but the club bounced back to make the playoffs in 2021, then posted a 13–4 mark in 2022 and returned to the Super Bowl in 2023 at 12–5. A disappointing 6–11 campaign in 2024 gave way to another 12–5 playoff run in 2025, and the current 2026 season has opened 2–0.
